About

I’ve been a DJ since 1986 ever since I fell in love with Hip Hop. Wanting an ‘in’ at those early days of the genre, I, along with others identified DJing as a way to participate. We had no idea we were in for a wild ride.

We watched diligently, built up skills, acquired equipment and records as we went, and soon we were DJing regularly to growing crowds. As time went on, high school gigs turned into college gigs and other private events. A love for Hip Hop found good company in House Music and related genres. As the collective went separate ways, I found myself in the club scene, serving the Boston and Sothern New Hampshire region. I had a great run through the 90’s furthering my skills spinning Hip Hop, R&B, House, Techno and Dance. Soon the scene started to wane, and I sought a new path in a technology career.

Fast forward to the 2000’s and I soon found myself back into it, merging my love and experience with technology with that of DJing. The new DJ technology has been a real enabler. Everything now in the digital realm, the possibilities seemed endless, from a myriad of effects, unprecedented control and extreme portability. I quickly grew a digital library, got into virtual vinyl / time code before that gave way to straight-up all digital decks. I still kept my Technics 1200’s close though and at this point, they were still my preferred control surface.

We have gone through some tough times with the pandemic, and tough times can often present new opportunities, so I explored the growing world of online streaming. This was a game-changer. All of a sudden, I found an audience, and quite a large one, not feet from where I type this. Enter Beanpot Studios. I started a monthly live stream on Mixcloud and even published a few shows.

As the pandemic passed, I went through quite a serious medical event that affected motor control of the right side of my body. With lots of therapy, commitment, a positive attitude, and yes, my DJ rig, I got back on my horse. Reapplying my skills as a DJ really did help with my recovery, both physically and mentally. Although I’m still working through limitations, I am back doing shows online and in-person, with a limited but growing repertoire. Sadly, the 1200’s got pushed to the perimeter in favor of digital decks as I am able to do more under these constraints. The result is rewarding, with a continued progression toward my full capabilities.

I hope you have a chance to catch a live show on Mixcloud soon. I will start posting new events here, on the DJM1K / Beanpot Radio web site and social media.
